The Marysville transfer station: the main drop-off for Yuba-Sutter
The Recology Yuba-Sutter Transfer Station on North Levee Road is the public drop-off for almost everyone in Yuba City, Marysville, Linda, Olivehurst and Plumas Lake. It's about 15 minutes from Yuba City. You pull onto the scale, unload, and pay based on your load.
It takes the stuff most cleanouts are made of: furniture, boxes, household junk, and construction and demolition debris from a remodel.
A few things will save you time and money there:
- Separate before you go. Yuba-Sutter's organic waste ordinance requires self-haulers to keep yard waste and other organics separate from trash. Put brush in one load and junk in another, or at least keep them in separate sections of the trailer.
- Keep electronics out of mixed loads. Electronics are free on their own, but if they're mixed into a load of trash, you pay disposal weight on the whole load.
- Cover the load. California requires loads to be secured so nothing falls or blows out on the road, and an uncovered load can cost more at the gate.
Can I use the landfill instead?
Usually not. The Ostrom Road Landfill near Wheatland is the region's landfill, but Recology lists it as open to commercial haulers by prior arrangement. For a homeowner with a trailer or pickup, the Marysville transfer station is the place to go.
If you live up in the foothills, the Ponderosa Transfer Station at 17219 Ponderosa Way in Brownsville is open to the public Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It takes trash, yard debris and construction and demolition material.
What's free (check this before you pay)
Mattresses. Yuba and Sutter county residents can drop off up to four mattresses, box springs or futons per vehicle per day at the Marysville transfer station at no charge. Evans Furniture Warehouse on Epley Drive in Yuba City also takes them free, Monday through Saturday.
Household hazardous waste. Old paint, oil, antifreeze, pesticides and household batteries go to the Yuba-Sutter Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 134 Burns Drive, off Garden Highway in south Yuba City. It's free for Yuba and Sutter households on Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bring products in their original containers if you can. There's also a free Reuse Center inside with recycled paint and other leftovers people have dropped off.
Electronics. Household electronics are free at the hazardous waste facility on Saturdays.
Bulky item pickup. If you have Recology garbage service at a single-family home, you get four free bulky item collections a year. In Yuba City, each pickup covers up to five bulky items. In Marysville, Live Oak, Wheatland and unincorporated areas, it's up to two cubic yards plus one large item like a sofa or appliance. You can trade a pickup for a free transfer station pass instead, good for a residential load up to one ton in a non-commercial vehicle or trailer. You have to register ahead by calling (530) 743-6933.
What never goes in the trash or your trailer load
Paint, solvents, motor oil, car batteries, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs and other chemicals can't go in your trash cart or a load of household junk. Take them to the household hazardous waste facility on a Saturday. If a container is leaking or damaged, call Recology first for directions on transporting it.
How to haul a big cleanout in one trip
A pickup bed holds about two cubic yards, and you unload it by hand. That's fine for a few bags. For a garage cleanout, a remodel or a yard full of brush, it turns into four or five round trips to Marysville.
A 7×14 dump trailer with 4 ft walls holds roughly 14 cubic yards, and the bed tips up so the load slides out at the transfer station in seconds. Our dump trailers rent for $110–150 a day, depending on the trailer and wall height.
Pick the right walls for what you're hauling:
- 2 ft walls for heavy material like dirt, concrete, roofing or gravel. It's easier to shovel into, and you won't be tempted to overload it.
- 4 ft walls for mixed remodel debris, the safe middle.
- 5 ft walls for bulky, light junk like furniture, boxes and brush.
Load it smart. Put heavy items over the axles, fill the corners, and keep the load level. Tarp it before you leave. Bring gloves and a flat shovel for whatever sticks in the bed.
Clearing brush or busting up an old patio? Pair the trailer with our mini skid steer. You load with the bucket instead of a shovel, run the load to the transfer station, and come back for the next one.
Don't want to make the dump run at all?
We'll do it for you. Our 20-yard junk removal drop-off is a flat $545: we drop a high-wall trailer at your place, you fill it at your own pace, and we haul it away. If you'd rather not lift anything, ask about full-service junk removal, where we load it too.
