When renting beats hiring it out — and when it doesn't

Renting makes sense when the work is straightforward and you've got the time. Spreading gravel, moving a dirt pile, clearing brush, leveling a pad — these are jobs where the machine does the hard part and you just need seat time.

Hiring a contractor makes more sense when the work needs precision or carries risk. Structural grading, digging near utilities, anything with a permit attached, or work where a mistake costs more than the labor you saved. Know which one you're doing before you book.

The honest test: if you can picture yourself finishing the job in a day or two of steady work, rent. If you're unsure what "done right" even looks like on this job, hire it out.

Notice the weekly rate is three days' worth of daily pricing. Two ways to handle it, depending on how much work you want to do:

Rent a dump trailer alongside the machine. Load it as you go, run it to the transfer station, come back and keep working. This is the cheapest route and it keeps the whole job on your schedule. Use our junk removal drop-off. We drop a trailer at your property, you load it on your own timeline, and we haul it away. You never touch the dump. If you'd rather not spend your Saturday in a transfer station line, this is the option.

Either way, decide before the machine shows up. It's the difference between a two-day project and a two-weekend one.

What you need to have ready

Transport. The machine needs to get to your property. If you're towing it yourself, make sure your tow vehicle and hitch are rated for the load — we'll walk you through the setup and can point you toward the right hitch configuration.

Access. Measure your gate and your tightest pinch point before you book. A mini skid steer fits most standard side gates, but "most" isn't "all," and finding out on delivery day is a wasted trip.

A staging spot. Somewhere to put material as you move it, and somewhere the machine can sit overnight if you're on a multi-day rental.

Fuel. Bring it back the way you got it.
